I am not really sure how I am going to break this down yet, but I figure just go with it and see how it unfolds. This seems to be my underlying theme too…well…most of my life.
So the way this Bible works for study is that it has a 3 track system. The one I am doing is track 3. This track takes about 3 years and goes through the entirety of the Bible. It also alternates between the old and New Testament. So yeah…3 years. At least I have one blog entry set for awhile. Ha! On a more bloggy note, I think I am just going to write two or three paragraphs per blog entry and whatever verses get covers are the ones that get covered. I want to go by length of blog entry rather than by verse(s) because I don’t want my blog entries to become books of their own.
And now….Genesis
Genesis 1:2-5 “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, ‘ Let there be light,’ and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.” Now here is what I think. Is this a romanticized big bang theory? God says let there be light and it is so in an instant. It took seven days to make all of the earth and its inhabitants. It all started with light..snap..there was earth, and then the process for it to become the earth as we know it. Granted in real time it took longer. Scientifically, that’s pretty much how the earth was formed..BANG…and then it started its process. I don’t know. I feel like it’s a poetic explanation of the Big Bang theory. Some scientific truth in the midst of theology perhaps? I also found it interesting that God saw that light was good, but no mention of darkness being good or bad….or evil for that matter. So…is this where our misguided ideology of light and dark began to form? Dark, or darkness isn’t bad, it isn’t good either…it is how we perceive it. Too much light and things burn and dehydrate, too much darkness and things cease to grow. We need both to survive, we need both to rest and to live, we need both to spiritually grow and heal. Aren’t they both good…and bad? All things in moderation right?
Genesis 1:14-18 “And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth.’ And it was so. God made two great lights – the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on th earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.” So God gave us astronomy to help us journey through the seasons and years (more science again). He gave us the moon and sun to mark our days. According to Genesis we have been lead by the the stars in the skies since the dawn of time, how pagan-y of us.
