And so we return…..
”Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” (Genesis 1:26)
This is where I wonder if in fact there was more than one god even in the beginning of the Bible. With phrased such as “in our likeness”, how can there not be. Who is he talking to when he says that. I have had this discussion with a Christian and they said that it was the angels God was speaking with. That makes sense, sort of. My next question is if there was a hierarchy of Gods, Angels, Humans, etc. Why would God want make us in the angels image? Why would he use the word “our” when talking about the image? Angels and God are the same image? Angels are gods but not the “High God” (similar to the High King type of role)? Now comes in the argument of putting human qualities or characteristics to something that isn’t human. I get that and it makes sense to me. Still…who was God speaking too? So…I wonder, based on what I have found sits well with me, if it is the ultimate oneness. The oneness speaks in we and our, because that’s what it is. We all connect in this oneness and yet when we go to have our human experience, we are individuals. We are on our own journeys back to the oneness.
“Then God said, ‘I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And so all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground – everything that has the breath of life in it – I give green plant for food.’ And it was so.” (Genesis: 1:29-30)
Okay, okay, okay. Sometimes….there will be some cynicism and sarcasm. I will do my best to keep it to a minimum. These verses struck me…um…funny. As someone who is leaning towards veganism, what better defense is there as ‘God intended us…all of us…to eat plants and to live harmoniously otherwise? Interesting argument isn’t it? Now before anyone gets all up in arms. I have my reasons for going towards veganism, but I don’t tell others what to eat or anything like that. My entire family loves meat. My kids are picky enough when it comes to food I don’t need to be restricting them on the few foods they will eat.
So…that’s it for today. I am still trying to figure out how I want to do this particular entry. If things go this rate, I won’t be able to get on to any other books. We will see what happens next week.
